Oregon National Guard Youth Challenge Program welcomes class of 2010
Hannah Benson and London Foster-Day of Wilsonville recently entered the rigorous Oregon National Guard Youth Challenge Program (OYCP). They are among 156 other at-risk youth from throughout the Northwest who will be going through the program this year.
OYCP is the only statewide alternative high school in Oregon. The program is free to cadets and their families. Open to youth who have dropped out of high school or had legal problems, cadets continue their education and develop life plans through a two-phase program, beginning with an intensive, five-month residential program.
Upon graduating from OYCP, cadets receive a high school diploma, a GED, or have earned enough credits to return to high school. Graduation is followed by one year of mentoring by a mentor of the youth’s choice.
Since 1994, more than 3,800 cadets Oregon have entered the OYCP. The voluntary, 17-month program provides youth who risk not completing high school with a second chance to succeed. Information about the Youth Challenge Program can be found at
www.oycp.com
or 541-317-9623.
