The competitiveness is there.

And while the Wilsonville wrestling team's league record won't show it, the Wildcats are showing ever-growing improvement every week.

Wilsonville dropped its third league dual, falling to Century, 42-34, on Thursday at home in a matchup that was not decided until last match of the night.

With the Wildcats facing a 39-34 deficit heading into the heavyweight match, Wilsonville senior Neil Ochs had a chance to win the dual if he was able to pin Century's Jared Bridgwater.

In the most thrilling match of the night, the two battled to three overtimes as Bridgwater scored a 2-1 decision to win the dual for the Jaguars.

However, the encouraging signs continue for the Wildcats, who won five matches on the night and hung close the entire dual.

At 103, Wilsonville's Seth Sondenaa defeated Dalen Baccay by fall; at 112, Adam Buck beat Greyson Buen by fall; at 119, Hunter Smith defeated Mike Saechao by major decision; at 189, Gabe Carbajal took down Aaron Beadle by fall; and at 215, Adrian Escobedo scored a fall over John Waibel.

The Jaguars won eight consecutive matches from 125 to 171 pounds.

Those matches included Century's Chris Steffen beating Colton Holly by fall at 125; Geoff Gunther defeating Patrick McDermott by decision at 130; Dylan Vandehey beating Troy Sims by fall at 135; DJ Fernandez taking down Travis Winters by fall at 140; Saul Andrade taking down Duncan Soqui by fall at 145; Alex Rangel beating Mike Nelson by fall at 152; Mike Wilson scoring a fall over Jordan Harr at 160; and Nick Saccareccia won by forfeit at 171.

Wildcats sixth at McMinnville: Wilsonville finished sixth out of 10 teams at the McMinnville tournament on Saturday at McMinnville High School.

Escobedo was the Wildcats’ lone individual champion, winning by default over Woodburn’s Adrian Mendoza.

The Wildcats scored 120 points in the tournament. McMinnville won with 222 points, followed by Stayton (219), Woodburn (187.5), Willamina (148) and Sunset (139).
