Wilsonville’s Nick Cummings looks to take down Sherwood’s Daniel Leonard during Thursday’s 48-36 loss at Sherwood High School. The Wildcats dropped to 0-4 in Northwest Oregon Conference play heading into Wednesday’s dual match against Liberty on the road at 7 p.m.
SHERWOOD — The Wilsonville wrestling team has made big strides over the past three seasons under coach Jason Milham.
While the first couple steps to rebuilding the program involved getting numbers out and being competitive, the Wildcats feel they have already accomplished that.
Now, it’s all about taking that next step to becoming complete wrestlers and learning different situations after Wilsonville fell to Sherwood, 48-36, on Thursday at Sherwood High School.
The Wildcats lost eight matches — seven by fall and one by forfeit — allowing the Bowmen to score the victory.
“I don’t think the team wrestled to its potential,” Milham said. “We didn’t put together the best dual meet we could have. We’re giving up falls in places where we shouldn’t be giving up those falls and it cost us
the dual meet.”
Wilsonville dropped to 0-4 in Northwest Oregon Conference play, heading into Wednesday’s dual against Liberty on the road at 7 p.m.
Milham said he was not disappointed in his team’s effort, but wants his wrestlers to start understanding the situation they’re in.
“I know they’re working hard and doing the things we’re asking them to do,” he said. “I was just a little disappointed in some of the ways we managed our matches and losing by fall instead of losing by points. So that’s where my disappointment came in. Overall, the kids have been working hard and getting better every single week.”
Wilsonville won six matches on the night, including two by forfeit from Hunter Smith at 112 pounds and Neil Ochs at 285.
Patrick McDermott defeated Sherwood’s Evan Castillo by fall in 49 seconds at 130 and Mike Nelson beat Tyler Shelburne by fall in 1:35 at 145.
Other victories for the Wildcats came from Gabe Carbajal over Harris Foster by fall in 2:21 at 171, and Adrian Escobedo over Patrick Sisco by fall in 20 seconds at 215.
Escobedo is undefeated so far this season after overcoming illness early on.
“Since he’s come out, he hasn’t lost a match,” Milham said. “He won the McMinnville tournament and every time he gets out there, he’s real aggressive and physical, and does his best to look for a fall. I think if he keeps that attitude and that mentality, I think he’s sitting real well next week and the next several weeks heading into the district tournament.”
In other matches, Wilsonville’s Seth Sondenaa (103), Nick Cummings (119), Colton Holly (125), Troy Sims (135), Travis Winters (145), Jordan Harr (160) and Markiese Brown (215) all lost by fall.
Milham said he is looking forward to see how his team responds on Wednesday at Liberty.
“I think it is a winnable dual,” he said. “Liberty has some solid kids in their lineup but I think top to bottom, we probably stack up better than they do so again, if the kids put together good matches in each weight class and wrestle the way we’ve been working on, I think we can have a good dual.”
