The Wilsonville High School dance team poses with its first-place trophy after winning the Class 5A small-team division on Saturday at the Mt. Hood and Friends Dance competition.
The Wilsonville High School Pride dance team again had an impressive outing on Saturday.

The Pride took home first place in the Class 5A small team division at the 12th annual Mt. Hood and Friends Dance competition at Parkrose High School.

The competition was hosted by the Parkrose Elite dancers with premier teams in each division, dance/drill, show, small and large.

After two successful competitions, Wilsonville has more than winning on its minds after earning Grand Champion honors at Stayton two weeks ago.

“It is so awesome to hear your state music when they announce the first place awards,” coach Chelle Watt said. “We just want to keep hearing our music at the rest of the competitions this year, especially at state.”

The Pride had strong performances in the morning and afternoon sessions to take first place in the Class 5A small-team division.

Gresham High School won the Class 6A small-team division, Scappoose  High School won in Class 4A/3A, Lincoln High School won in Class 6A large and Clackamas High School won the show division.

“We are so excited for our girls,” Watt said. “They have been working so hard. They are amazing dancers and we think they are awesome.”

The team is also coached by Missy Miller and Ryan Sanford.

The contemporary jazz routine paints a beautiful picture on the gym floor. Although the little over 5-minute routine is finished, the Pride dancers’ work is not done.

“An excellent state routine is a growing and evolving process,” Watt said. “There are always little ways to improve the dance, to clean and polish it and to make it that much better. And that is what we will be working on the next four weeks before state — fine-tuning the routine.”

The team’s goal is to hear its music, “Time is Running Out ... Make Every Moment Count,” at the state championship competition awards ceremony on Saturday, March 20.

Up next, the Pride will compete at Centennial High School on Saturday, March 6. They will also participate in a shorter evening exhibition at Tigard High School on Saturday, March 13.
