EUGENE -- The Wilsonville Spokesman will again be in Eugene following the journeys of the Wilsonville boys and girls basketball teams as they look for the state championship.

The girls team started things off on a good note, taking down Hermiston, 43-32, on Wednesday at Mac Court in a game that featured a ton of missed shots in the first half. However, like they have done all season, the Wildcats pulled away in the second half and held on.

Now it's the boys turn.

There won't be a tougher task than what Wilsonville has in store today.

No. 1 Jefferson is the defending Class 5A state champion.

The Democrats boast the best high school player in the state today with Terrence Jones. And they have no doubt been picked since the preseason to win it all again.

Jefferson is 23-3 overall this season, going 14-0 against Class 5A teams. It finished as the PIL champions at 12-0, and is coming off a 122-78 victory over South Albany in the second round of the playoffs to reach Eugene.

Jefferson led by as many as 53 points, and Jones had 31 in the game.

The two programs have a little history with one another, meeting in the Class 5A state playoffs two years ago. The Democrats defeated Wilsonville, 69-51, in the second round to advance to Mac Court.

The Wildcats have one player left over from that 2007-08 team that played in that game, and that is Northwest Oregon Conference player of the year Michael MacKelvie.

The matchups will certainly be interesting. Who will guard Jones for Wilsonville? How will the Wildcats defend the Democrats?

Can Wilsonville just stay close and give itself a chance in the fourth quarter? The answers will await in a few hours.
