TVFR Chief Jeff Johnson will retire Aug. 31.
Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue Fire Chief Jeff Johnson submitted his retirement to the board of directors during a regular meeting March 16.

His retirement will be effective Aug. 31.

Johnson, a Wilsonville resident, said the action “is the culmination of a succession plan that began many years ago in anticipation of the retirements of TVFR’s executive staff.”

Since that time, he indicated in a written statement, the district has been “promoting and integrating individuals to key positions to ensure continuity of leadership and organizational success.”

After accepting the retirement, the board of directors appointed Deputy Fire Chief Mike Duyck as the new fire chief, effective Sept. 1.

“I could not be more excited about the board’s decision and trust in Mike Duyck’s ability to lead TVFR,” wrote Johnson.

Duyck has been, effectively, leading the district while Johnson served for since July as president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. His 15 years with TVFR includes all ranks within emergency services, from firefighter to deputy chief.

Johnson said Duyck also has experience on the support side of the organization, including logistics, fleet services, human resources and governmental affairs.

The board will finalize the terms of a contract with Duyck before Sept. 1. During that time, Johnson will retain “command and control” of TVFR while Duyck continues to manage day-to-day operations.

“It has been my greatest honor to have served 15 years as the fire chief of one of the nation’s top fire and rescue agencies,” said Johnson. “I could not be more excited about the board’s decision and trust in Chief Duyck’s ability to lead TVFR’s next generation of firefighters and staff. I have no doubt that he and his team will take TVFR to the next level of excellence and innovation.”
