Sports in brief: Wilsonville baseball, girls tennis and more

The Wilsonville baseball team didn’t have the rivalry series it wanted, but it didn’t let the three games pass without accomplishing something. The Wildcats won their final meeting with the Bowmen at home May 3, earning an 8-5 triumph and snapping a six-game losing streak against their league rivals that dated back to 2011.

Mike Nichols knew one day of good scores wouldn’t be enough to clinch a state bid. Even after the Wilsonville girls golf team built a small lead over Sandy in the opening round of the Northwest Oregon Conference district tournament May 6-7 at The Reserve in Aloha, the coach couldn’t help but remember what happened last year: Leading by 11 strokes after the first day, the Wildcats shot poorly in the second round and ended up losing the conference title by one.

Eidy Bambang and Ben Traffas ended their Wilsonville tennis careers in the consolation semifinals at the Class 5A state doubles tournament. In their first-ever appearance at the OSAA championships, the seniors earned a thrilling 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6) victory over Summit partners Thomas Wimberly and Elliott Sherpa in a play-in match May 16 at West Hills Racquet & Fitness Club in Portland to reach the round of 16.

Madisyn Bryant figures to become a well-known force in Oregon prep girls tennis. Wilsonville sophomore Haley Moss is already plenty familiar. Moss fell 6-2, 6-0 in the Class 5A singles quarterfinals to the phenomenal Eugene-Marist freshman, who went on to capture the state title by defeating West Albany junior Chelsea Clark — the defending state champion — in straight sets.
